The purpose of the Tree Replacement Project is to provide locally grown, native trees for residents who lost trees to storms and other causes. Central Arkansas Master Naturalists will provide native trees, sourced and grown locally, and include education on trees and tree care to help ensure growth to healthy maturity. We have prepared saplings on local properties for transplant, by root-pruning and inventorying trees available. Planting native trees supports native insects that in turn support native birds. Native trees are already adapted to the local climate.
CAMN was founded in 2006. Our mission is to develop a corps of well-informed volunteers to provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities. We are a 501C3 charitable organization of volunteers and will not be charging for trees or planting assistance. We are not a nursery growing trees as a business.
Our trees will be usually 2 to 3 feet tall at planting and like any new tree will need regular care to grow to maturity. At homes without irrigation systems, we will supply a watering bag. Young trees need constant moisture.
We are available to speak to neighborhood group meetings about the project and answer questions. We often have native plant seeds and wildflower seeds to distribute.
We encourage groups to work together. We try to organize our plantings by neighborhoods, bringing a group of trees to a street or neighborhood to be planted in one morning. We show our planting methods and talk about tree care, use of watering bags, using rocks for moats, and using mulch to keep the ground moist but the tree trunk clean and dry. Ideal planting times for trees and shrubs in Arkansas are October into December and January through March.
