About this event
We have 2 project areas in the Russellville-Dardanelle area that could use a check-in before the cold winter temps set in: the Dardanelle Lock and Dam baseball field and Mount Nebo State Park.
Dardanelle Lock and Dam:
In December of 2024, FAMN partnered with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Pope County Master Gardeners to turn an old baseball field into a restored prairie habitat. 6 acres were planted with native forb and grass species, and last year's exceptionally rainy spring made for an incredibly successful first year for this project! While there aren't any colorful blooms or insects to see in the wintertime, this area provides much-needed shelter and food for many native animals. Meet at 11am in the large parking lot at the end of Lock and Dam Rd. for a walk-through of this project site (coordinates: 35.249943, -93.165732).
Mount Nebo State Park:
This is one of our designated project areas, and we have a couple different projects within the park. In spring of 2024, we planted the flowerbeds behind the visitor center with native wildflowers, and this past December, we extended our plantings further behind the visitor center along the Rim Trail. There are also quite a few Ozark Chinquapin trees planted throughout the park. It's been a while since the mountain received any rain, so this will be a good opportunity to make sure all the plants are watered and working on establishing strong root systems. We will also help out with any other projects the park may need assistance with. This will be our second stop of the day, so carpools can be arranged at the Dardanelle Lock and Dam.
NiTs are welcome and encouraged to attend. This event will count for volunteer hours under "Native Plant Project."
